I fear that there will never again be a new sphere in my life in Haarlem
by connie on Jun.02, 2010, under ConnieleneKnits blog
We were wandering about town last evening making a decision about where we should eat to celebrate our 42nd wedding anniversary.
We wandered about the square, checked the menus of all the places we have eaten at before, and those that we haven’t yet, and in the end we decided to try the new restaurant “Sumo” – and it was a great meal, great restaurant, great staff, even great wallpaper if you please. But this little story is not about our meal where we celebrated our 42nd wedding anniversary.
It is about the balls of Haarlem. You know the ones – The Great Balls of Haarlem”
I know I have spoken of these often, or should I say that “I have written about these often”. I have been photographing these balls of Haarlem for more than 1 and 1/2 years now – and I will have to post a gallery later.
But now it seems they really will not be back.
We have been watching as they rebuilt the road, reinstalled some of the balls, removed some of the balls, reinstalled more of the balls, and have had others balls nestled next to the St Bavo Church waiting to be reinstalled.
The square looked very very forlorn last evening. It wasn’t celebrating with us, it was cold and unyielding. It was crisp and sharp and defined, and missing the ambience that we have grown to know and love.
The balls, the great Balls of Haarlem have been replaced with cylindrical stainless steel posts and the balls are all thrown into the corner. They are surplus to requirements here in Haarlem, and the square looks so so wrong.
I simply cannot say anymore just now, I am gutted, I am sick to the core, I feel very very sad.
I must go to the square now, and see what it is like in the day time, and to take photos in case the balls are still there in the pile waiting to be removed. Believe it or not – we didn’t take the camera last evening.
I am passionate about those balls and I am going to miss them very much.
Blockety Block – It is not easy finding news or information
by connie on May.06, 2010, under ConnieleneKnits blog, Intarsia, Intarsia Book, Not Knitting
Just now it is not easy to find something to tell you about.
Maybe this is called Writer’s Block
Maybe it is called Designer’s Block
Maybe it is called Knitter’s Block
Maybe it is Ball Withdrawal Block
Maybe it is just called Blockety Block
Whatever it should be called in my case – I do believe I have a big case of whatever it is just now.
I am knitting – slowly.
I am thinking about new designs all the time – but slowly.
I am quietly frustrated trying to slowly complete those creations that I told you I was knitting.
So yet another to do list
- mohair shell sample
- 100% wool shell sample
- finish and photograph the carbon footprint bag
- publish the carbon footprint shadow knitting graph
- complete and publish the pattern for the sleeveless jacket in English
- translate the pattern for the sleeveless jacket into Danish
- maybe translate the pattern for the sleeveless jacket into Norwegian maybe
- finish black ball cover
- decide where and when to install black and white ball covers
- Intarsia E-book or print book planning
- I may be thinking about knit kits (thank you Constance for bringing that up)
- I may also be thinking about cloaks again (thank you Constance for bringing that up as well)
- I may be thinking about the Alexandra Blossom Festival committee invitation to participate in the WoolOn Creative Fashion Event of the 2010
- I may be thinking about the Fibre and Fleece Exhibition
- I am NOT thinking about creating for either event while I am in New Zealand
- I may be thinking about “King of the Mountain” run/walk in NZ on the first Sunday in July
And I am planning a trip to New Zealand to see our very special small person (grandson), our daughter, my courageous Mother In law, and family and friends – and that seems more important than everything and anything else just now.
Maybe that is the cause of the blockety block.
Because this a state of Blockety block – or is that Blankety Blank – if I have forgotten anything then please please remind me, thanks.
And in case it occurred to you, the Constance mentioned above is not me, myself and I. My name is really Connie Lene and not not Constance.
Oh, and did you pick up that my Norwegian is not as good as my Danish, which is certainly not as good as my English.
Vodafone was yarn bombed in Maastricht yesterday
by connie on Apr.24, 2010, under ConnieleneKnits blog, Knit Art Graffiti
I think we have said it already – we (Best Beloved and I) installed a ball cover / disguise on a ball outside Vodafone offices yesterday morning in Maastricht.
Maybe Vodafoners are so used to odd ball things which is why they just walked by without so much as a sideways glance.
So successfully installed.
Ball Cover was tooo Big
We were not accosted by anyone
TNT deliverers noticed. Vodafoners walked by.
It was still there at 3.30pm
update – Maastricht installation of ball cover postponed for April Fool’s Day
by connie on Mar.31, 2010, under ConnieleneKnits blog, Knit Art Graffiti
This little post will be so brief that you just might miss it.
There will not be a creative knitted / designer covering placed on a ball in Maastricht tomorrow – April 1st, April Fool’s Day. Unfortunately creating and knitting a sphere – with a logo – is much more difficult that estimated and the installation is postponed.
It will happen – I have the yarn, the spherical object, and its size. I have the will, I can knit and I will find the way to make that logo look right – which right now it simply does not.
If all else fails it will be knitted in the company colours without the logo. It will not be as effective without the logo but if it has be then it has to be.
Hope that does not happen.
Will keep you posted.
This is a link to an interesting list of April Fool’s Day hoaxes. This is not because mine is a hoax, it was fully my intent to install on April 1st – too much work, too little time and the complexity of adding a logo on a spherical piece of knitting just got in the way of completing the piece.
Black or White – Balls
by connie on Jan.26, 2010, under ConnieleneKnits blog
I have begun my new ball covers – well I have begun sorting my yarns, checking for the various textures, thickness of the yarn, deciding if 2 or 3 threads are required to knit the same tension as other yarns and so on.
Did you know there are hundreds of white and hundreds of black. I don’t have hundreds of each (I wish I did) – but I am matching yarns – short leftover lengths and assessing them against each other and seeing if any are the same colour and type. Trouble is that I have not labelled these pieces – so have to look at each one, and decide – so that when I knit them up – I will not knit 2 yarns the same, next to each other.
As one of these ball covers will be white, I want the many whites to show as different whites up close – although the overall effect will be white. I expect the same with the black yarns.
The end view I hope will be that nothing is very clear, that is nothing is simply black or white.
You might ask – why don’t I label these short lengths of yarn – the answer of course is that there are too many. Usually when I knit with many yarns, I also knit with many colours, so I have never got into the habit of labelling my leftovers. I have never knitted with many whites or with many blacks in one piece.
I still have to measure the ball so that we do not have to go out in the freezing cold each eveningto check the progress and sizing of the knitting as we did with the first one.
It is -4c right now, the sun is shinning and there is no or little wind so no excuses – must go measure.
The knitted scarf is still on the tree.
The knitted ball cover for “The Frozen Ball of Haarlem” seems to be lost for ever. I have bought a small ball and will knit a replica cover for it – just so I do not forget.
Is this really Knit Graffiti it is quite a lot of fun, a bit challenging, and here in the Netherlands it is freezing
Finished Pieces
by connie on Jan.25, 2010, under ConnieleneKnits blog
2 Danish Shawls – done and photographed, well one is done, the other still needs to have its 2 colour crochet edge added.
2 beanies for boys – done
Some Photographs – done, but I do wish I had a real live model. My grey mannequin – looks like she has fish skin and that her skin needs lots of moisturiser, my black mannequin doesn’t have proper shoulders, although she does looks great in hats – as long as the hat is not also black.
I have added 3 pieces to Ravelry and done some work on the setup of the Etsy shops.
And I am working on Carbon Footprint knitted Bag pattern – maybe one of my ball covers should be carbon footprints???
No I might just stick to Black and White.
