Something to aspire to: Fair Isle & steeks, Mange Tak Christel

by connie on Apr.02, 2011, under Blog

There is a project that makes my mind boggle at the sheer time, dedication and mastery of the craft that will be required to create it?

You already know that generally I do not knit fair isle. I have created a sweet little pinafore with a row of hearts – which were created with yarns stranded across the back – a very simple Fair Isle. My boats on little boys sweaters were done with intarsia. When I had a knitting machine eons ago – I did manage to create pieces with Fair isle designs.

You also know that I attended a workshop in Amsterdam with Danish knit designer and artist Christel Seyfarth

Christel lives and works on the Danish island of Fano. The changing tides, the special light and the sky are all important source of inspiration for her special and unique knit designs. She is fascinated by traditional clothes and takes the old patterns and designs and translates them into modern creations and her creations are in Fair Isle. She showed us at that workshop in Amsterdam that although it looks complex it is in fact simple fair isle. Her work is amazing in its construction, colour use and the finishing is just superb.

I was gobsmacked on that day and I still think of it with a great deal of pleasure – for all sorts of reasons. We both love the sea and light, our environments, colours, and yarns. There is pleasure in all of those things – but I simply cannot imagine myself with the skills and patience and the dedication to create one of her truely amazing pieces and I am terrified of steeks. Piffle you say! No it is not piffle.

It is not the Fair Isle, that seems to be as easy as Christel has said. It is not the colour – I am in love with colour. The pieces are made in rectangles and triangles – easy. It is the techniques including the steeks, and the dramatic finishing of each piece.

Do I have the patience, the skills, the confidence? I don’t actually know.

So my challenge is to knit a piece designed by Christel Seyfarth. On my “to do” list for me, that is the finished piece which will be created by me will also be for me. It will have to wait until we have settled back in New Zealand. So the winter of 2012 on New Zealand – that will be July to September 2012 – my big project will be a Christel Seyfarth design. It will include steeks – which as I have said already, quite frankly terrify me.

I am no longer going to be a scaredy cat regarding steeks. So there.

What does one create with one hank of Colourscape Chunky?

by connie on Nov.17, 2010, under Blog

I went into Amsterdam today to visit the Physiotherapist – who is helping me deal with some structural issues. On the way back to the railway station I went to walk past de Afstap – a little yarn shop in the heart of Amsterdam. And then I just could not help myself, I walked into de Afstap to have a look at their knitting and crochet books, and of course their yarn.

Rowan Colourscape Chunky - Maybe Jungle

Today a hank of Colourscape Chunky just flew off the hook on the wall into my hand and I bought it. I just couldn’t help myself.

The label, which I read on train has separated from the hank – so I had to check on the Rowan site to see what I have in my hot little hands.

So it is Colourscape Chunky – shade : well that I am unsure of – it could be “jungle”.

Colourscape is a roving type yarn with an artisan look and rustic appeal which is spun and made in Britain. Designed by renowned textile artist, Kaffe Fassett each hank gives a single repeat rainbow like effect.
Needle size : 7 mm
Tension / Gauge : 14 sts to 18 rows
Stiches per 10 cm : 14
Meterage / Yardage : 160 m / 175 yds
Yarn Specification : 100% lambswool

Now the next issue for me is “what does one create with one hank of Colourscape?” Any ideas out there please?

I have not knitted with the yarn previously. I do not often knit with this yarn weight and how far does 160 metres really go, yes I know it goes 160 metres. But when knitting a hat or a cowl or a scarf.

Thank you Kaffe for the colours in the hank.

Every time I have visited de Afstap (and that is quite often) I have walked past this yarn, sometimes I have stopped and looked at it, touched, taken it down (smelt it, felt it against my face) and put it back. Maybe this a new colour, maybe it is just the first time this colour has been hanging there in my view as I walked in the door. Maybe I was just ready.

Now I have it and I must create something!

Pile of mags, internet, knit books, ideas file, friend Meredith in Adelaide, We have to design the perfect top to go with the perfect skirt.

From Connielene – NOT A TWEET: There will be no more pictures – as I do have to keep the lid on what I am creating. I will still tweet a little of course so there may be a further chapter in the story of Lake Hawea.

Tweets for the uninitiated – can be no more than 140 characters. If you take the trouble to count the tweet characters you will see that mine here are 140 or 141 or 142. What that means is that I have added a full stop, or a space when I added them to my blog – which I ignored when I tweeted to keep the piece within the 140 characters.
