The wedding rug update

by on Jan.16, 2011, under Blog

I did start it a while back, a long while back. It is now about 6 feet or 2 metres along the 2 sides of the triangle. Soon I shall start to reduce one side of it to create a rectangle of some ridiculous proportion.

Circular needles are a wonderful thing as they enable me to create this throw in one piece. The knitting sits in my lap and is not heavy on the arms. There will be some ends to sew in but no seams. Perfect.

I am glad it is not summer though – it helps to keep me warm while I knit now that it flows down over my legs – could not create such a piece in the summer.

I am also glad to be able to use up all sorts of odd pieces of yarn as they (the young couple) who have seen my orange / silver / black /brown / reds rug and are happy to have their rug created with many yarns and shades of the chosen red / black / silver/grey. When completed it will look and feel great.

Original post here.

It is knitted in garter stitch on the diagonal – increasing 1 stitch at the beginning of every row using Yarn Over 2 stitches in from the edge. When I am happy with the length of one side I will begin the decreases.

We were in Switzerland for Christmas and Best Beloved and I slept under the bed spread / rug I created for our son and his partner for Christmas 2010. It was wonderfuly light and so warm – so think this one will be the same.

My 2008 Neck Warmer is having a different life

by on Jan.03, 2011, under Blog

In winter 2008 I had very little yarn here with me in the Netherlands. I had purchased some odd yarns at a fleamarket and had bought some bits and pieces at local shops here in Haarlem and in Amsterdam and Maastricht.

The yarns really were just a bit odd, and I didn’t have anything in mind to make/create.

BUT I was cold.

So I played with a design and created a neck warmer for myself out of these odd yarns. I wore it on my journey to Switzerland for our sons 40th birthday in Dec 2008 and I was very grateful for this very warm item of clothing that I had created. Sadly there are no photos of it as a neck warmer though.

In Switzerland there was an Angelica.

She saw the thing (the neck warmer / my neck warmer) and became rather excited. Now Angelica speaks Spanish, German and some English so it was said with a great deal of excitement and in halting English and dramatic Spanish that she wanted to try it on. We (Best Beloved and I) speak English, a hint of Dutch, me, almost reasonable Danish and no German and NO Spanish.

Fortunately our son who speak excellent German, English and understands some dramatic Spanish – translated.

And she did try it on – only not around her neck but around her body. She was adamant this was a perfect tunic dress.

My Neck Warmer as a dress! WOW

Angelica is a very tiny lady, maybe 4’10″ in her high heels. I said I would knit some straps and send neck warmer and straps to her to attact at the correct position. Which is what I did do.

And this last Christmas 2010 I saw the result for the first time.

loving those words – gaiter

by on Dec.09, 2010, under Blog

How is that you think you know a lot about lots of things. But you never do. Today I read about a clothing item called a gaiter. I looked at the photographs and then I looked up the word (gaiter(s)) – and they simply do not relate.

Wikipedia states:
Gaiters are garments worn over the shoe and lower pant leg, and used primarily as personal protective equipment; similar garments used primarily for display are spats. Originally, gaiters were made of leather. Today, gaiters for walking are commonly made of plasticized synthetic cloth such as polyester. Gaiters for use on horseback continue to be made of leather.

Now I understand that, but it seems that neck warmers, circular scarves, pieces that wrap the neck, cowls etc are also called gaiters. And they are not created with plasticized synthetic cloth – they are knitted or crocheted in delicious, warm, sumptuous, and colourful yarns.

When did that happen?

Where have I been!

I have been callng my cowls, my “not Isadora Duncan Scarves”, my neck and shoulder warmers, and other versions of fashionable scarves etc all of which are designed to wrap and keep the neck warm – I have been calling them anything and everything but gaiter.

Rib & Cable neck / shoulder warmer

How does a leg protector become a neck warmer?

Collins English Dictionary and Thesaurus:
gait n Manner of walking

gaiters pl n cloth or leather coverings for the legs or ankles [French Guêtre]

I kept looking and there seems to be a trend towards the gaiter being a practical item of clothing for skiers and motorbike riders and there are no photographs of the delicious, fashionable, hand knit designer gaiters that started me looking on google images for Gaiter

So someone out there, decided that while a wrap for the neck is also a piece of protective clothing (hence, Gaiter), there is no reason at all why that protective clothing should not also be a fashionable piece.

Hence the hand knit designer gaiter.

red socks that started my IOU problems

by on Oct.26, 2010, under Blog

Did you look at the photos above? Now you know why I was driven to volunteer to knit replacement red socks. These socks had to go, and they did go into my washing machine, and then when dry into my reminder of IOU box. And of course that Best Beloved he had to get in on the act. If I can knit red socks for son, surely I can knit red socks for him as well.

Now he knows I have never ever knitted a pair of socks – babies booties, slipper things in garter stitch – YES; Socks – NO.

Why would he add to my misery or to my list of challenges?

Well he did, damn him, now I have this wretched IOU for red socks for 2 men. I only promised son (stupidly), I would replace his tatty, holey, stretched, and dangerous to his feet, socks so that he would stop wearing them. You can see the state of them. These socks should not be worn again.

So now you have the pictures of the offending socks and you know why I was compelled to offer to knit socks, and why I have a great big IOU.

Maybe someone has some pristine socks from the original “Red Socks” campaign? Now that would be good.

Fabulous Feather and Fan Fingerless Gloves

Purple with Lavender funky fingerless gloves

Fabulous Feather and Fan Fingerless Gloves

PDF pattern provided by as attachment to email – Fabulous Feather and Fan fingerless Gloves

These are absolutely gorgeous fingerless gloves, ideal for quick wintery or Christmas presents – the short version being 40 rows long only.

The Yarn is DK or 8ply, knitted on 4mm needles. The pattern is in three lengths – short, medium & long. The long ones extend about 4 inches above the elbow.

They are knitted in the round so there is little finishing to do once the knitting is completed.

This pattern is a great stash buster – the short pair 50gm, and the long version 100 gm, and they take very little time to create, and are gorgeous to boot.
