Jacket pattern brewing

This sleeveless jacket pattern will be a doddle in English but a real challenge for me in Danish as my written Danish is very very average, and then my Norwegian is, well it is really nonexistant. That is I do not really know any Norwegian. I will be bribing the requesters for the help I need with the testing and checking of the pattern.

Fortunately I know one very well (my Danish cousin) and the other I am getting to know (lovely Trine from Norway). I hope they read this – which is why I have written the words down – they will need to be my testers.

But of course I am digressing – the real purpose of this post is to tell you that I will also create the pattern for lighter weight yarns as well, as the style is classic and interesting, as you can see in the version below with long fitted sleeves and shaped peplum and without the shawl collar.

I think this jacket will work well in a double knitting (8 ply / worsted weight yarn), making it a great in between seasons jacket.

I am not committing to writing the pattern in any other languages however. I shall get the sleeveless one completed in the three languages and then see how well I survived the process and then decide.

Both versions of this jacket were included in the Colour Play exhibition held in the Randolph St Gallery, at Whitecliffe School of Fine Arts and Design campus in 2007. A Vogue Knitters Tour Group from USA hosted by Nicky Epstein and Carla Scott attended the opening.

Peplum

Curiously Peplum has two distinct and almost separate definitions. Its early origins are Greek, and peplum was simply the word for tunic. The peplum, a term dating back to the 19th century, is also a short overskirt that is usually attached to a fitted jacket. My jacket is certainly a fitted jacket with a short skirt.

I found a lovely reminder of the Vogue Knitters Tour 2007

by connie on Mar.10, 2010, under Blog

I do not know the name of the model wearing my Great New Zealand Cloak – but it was a nice surprise to find this photograph today. I had followed an advertisement for the upcoming Italian “Vogue Knitting Italia 2010″ tour and explored and found this photograph from the 2007 tour which came to New Zealand & Australia. That tour was also hosted by Carla Scott and Nicky Epstein, and we were all delighted to meet them.

Vertical Asia Crossover Jacket – Free Pattern

by connie on Mar.24, 2009, under Blog, Vertical Asia Crossover Jacket

This jacket is knitted in one piece from left sleeve cuff to right sleeve cuff. The colour sequence creates different colour effects – that is the left sleeve and left front are different to the right sleeve and right front. You can create this jacket using less or more colours and you could also create this jacket with the colour sequence mirrored if you wish.

The knitting is finished with a crochet edge – which could be created using any of the colours in the jacket.

This jacket was included in an exhibition held in Auckland New Zealand that was attended by a group of knitters from the USA on the New Zealand & Australian Vogue Knitters Tour of 2007.

Hot Pink Jacket

by connie on Nov.14, 2007, under Blog, Design Process

One thing I had not realised as I was preparing for the Colour Play exhibition to which I knew the Vogue Knitting tour group with Carla Scott and Nickey Epstein were attending, was that I had any hot pink yarns at all. hot_pink2.jpg

Melissa had said to me that I had to create a jacket, or waistcoat in hot pink as this was the in colour for 2007. I didn’t really believe her and I couldn’t rush out to buy a substantial range of yarns and colours in hot pink because that meant going to many shops all over Auckland to look for a good range – and there was no time to do that on top of creating the garments that I had already planned.

So we hunted through my stash – and to my amazement I had a lot of hot pinks or other colours to blend and balance with my hot pinks and so I created the “Hot Pink” sleeveless jacket. It turned out a real stunner and Melissa claimed it as her own as she had made me create something different, something very different. This really was playing with colour for the “Colour Play” exhibition.

Fiber artist and knit designer Connie Lene Johnston gave us a sneak peek of her “Colour Play” collection. The show would officially open in a few days, featuring her work as well as that of students from the Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design.

During the wine-and-cheese reception, Ms. Johnston described each garment’s evolution, texture, construction and how she used color in each one. We were invited to try on the clothes—not your typical art exhibit.
